Ludhiana: A haunting final WhatsApp video of hymns and hope has become the last memory of a mother, as divers continue the desperate search for her missing daughter.
This WhatsApp video uploaded to a mother's status at 2.36pm on Friday showed a group of pilgrims singing hymns, their voices buoyed by the gentle rocking of a boat on the Yamuna river. It is the last recorded moment of Meenu Bansal and her daughter, Dinki, before the vessel capsized in a tragedy that has left one Ludhiana family shattered and another child missing in the murky waters of Vrindavan.
The body of Meenu Bansal was returned to the Dugri neighborhood on Saturday morning for cremation. However, for her husband, local bicycle-parts businessman Anoop Bansal, the mourning is eclipsed by a desperate search. Dinki Bansal, the youngest of three children, remains missing, with local divers and emergency crews unable to locate her.
A Fateful Decision
The tragedy was preceded by a last-minute change of plans. While Meenu had long been scheduled to join the neighbourhood bus pilgrimage to the holy city, her daughter had only decided to join 48 hours before departure. "Dinki started insisting that she wanted to join her mother," Anoop Bansal said.
"We refused initially, but she was adamant. Eventually, we agreed to let her go."
The Final Contact
The last voice contact occurred Friday morning at 8am, when Meenu called to confirm their safe arrival in Vrindavan. "She actually complained that I hadn't called her first to check if they had arrived," Bansal recalled. "She told me she would call again in the evening. I never imagined that would be our last conversation."
The subsequent WhatsApp video, posted less than an hour before the accident, showed a scene of devotion that quickly turned to terror. Witnesses told the family that Dinki had been sitting on the bow of the boat. She was heard screaming as the vessel veered toward a collision with another object, shortly before it overturned.
The Search Continues
While several victims were recovered and taken to local hospitals, Dinki has not appeared on any survivor or casualty lists. "Our relatives in Vrindavan have checked every hospital and the mortuary. There is no trace of her," Bansal said.
Local administration officials in Uttar Pradesh suspect the current may have carried the young woman downstream. Search and rescue operations remain active, though hopes of finding the youngest Bansal sibling alive are fading. The tragedy has cast a pall over the Dugri Phase-II locality, a close-knit community where religious group trips are a common fixture of social life. Authorities are currently investigating the boat's capacity and safety standards as the death toll from the incident continues to be monitored.
